The Progressive Era The progressive movement began to emerge in the late 1800s It was a time for change in America as well as a time for reform The main beliefs of progressives were social cohesion organization and efficiency and antimonopoly Brinkley 629 They felt that society was definitely capable of improvement Their main goal was to gain the backing of the government and make it more egalitarian During this time presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt tried to regulate and control big businesses In many ways the progressive movement was successful however in other ways it was not The progressives were made up of many middle and upper class workers As the middle class Americans began to develop and grow they eventually came into power These farmers factory workers and plant workers wanted change and ultimately won This group was strongest in the Northeast and Midwest as well as major cities Unlike many other reform parties the progressives were also made up of women Beginning in the early 1900s and continuing well into the present was the idea that women should be provided with the same rights and opportunities as men Women such as Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought to gain the right to vote as well Colasurdo 2 as the right to join unions However due to male prejudices these unions slowly diminished Unfortunately during this era many minorities failed to take important steps towards reformation Immigrants were strongly disregarded due to incompetence and American Indians were seen as inferior Because of previous stereotypes they were regulated to minimal paying unskilled jobs However African Americans began to take great steps towards equality They began to lift themselves up instead of conforming to whites One of the strongest elements of progressive thought was the belief that the environment shaped the individual Brinkley 631 The work of women to create settlement houses which assisted immigrants
