Early humans were known as hunters and gathers With the men being hunters and the women being gathers In time groups of humans began to adopt horticulture a system of growing food Women played the major role as food producers of grain cereal and vegetable crops31 These women used very primitive tools to do so While the men continued to hunt and fish In all the horticultural societies the men cleared the land for planting while women andor men plant and harvest the crops Products that were grown or made helped the women gain more autonomy in their personal lives and power in their marital relationships 31 As time passed people in the horticultural societies began to increase their productivity through advanced cultivation techniques 32 The domestication of animals helped supplied families with wool milk and muscle power33 The men using animal powered plows replaced the women as primary producers33 Women began to do more with wool and fibers they accumulated on the homestead by spinning them into threads and then weaving them together creating cloth As more time passed division of labor came about based on the fact that items of exchangeable wealth produced on the homestead could be traded for other items which were not At this time the men have complete taken the planting and harvesting that women once did This left the women to be considered unimportant and also causing them to become isolated throughout the society Women were now only seen to be suited for inside and domestic tasks37
