The trumpet has been one of the few instruments to pass the test of time by adapting and changing with new music and uses The trumpet has a very long history beginning with ancient civilizations that used hollow materials such as animal horns and sea shells to amplify sound Since then great change has taken place and the trumpet is almost an entirely new instrument from what it was thousands of years ago The trumpet has been used in numerous settings ranging from war battles to weddings The oldest evidence of the trumpet can been found in drawings dating to 1500 BC by the Egyptians and the Teutonic tribes The ancient trumpets consisted of a long tube that was about 120 cm long which had a conical tube at one end measuring about 10 cm in diameter expanding to 25 cm at the other end These trumpets were made of silver or bronze They were probably used for communication purposes like signaling in battle or announcing someones arrival Other ancient lands also had their version of the trumpet Early versions of the instrument have been found in Rome Israel Greece South India China Tibet and Japan The dung the version of the trumpet used in Tibet is still in use today and is almost fifteen feet long The Olympics in Greece included a trumpet playing competition In Rome Tibet and Israel the instrument itself was considered to be very religious These ancient civilizations only allowed priests to play the trumpet In the King James Version of the Bible trumpets are symbolic for the voices of angels Little changed for the trumpet because it was restricted to playing only the natural tones because the trumpets basic design was a single unvarying tube until the mid 1800s when slides andor valves were added During the Middle Ages trumpets continued to be used as devices for frightening opponents in battle They were also used during rituals for signaling
