The draft riot that occurred in New York City in 1863 had several causes such as the draft itself President Abraham Lincoln The Republican Party the Conscription Act and The Emancipation Proclamation The draft was an outrageous idea because it was considered tyrannical It would have been strange indeed if the American people had submitted to a measure which is a distinctive mark of the most despotic governments of the continent The New York Times 1 Abraham Lincoln caused controversy because he was the one that signed the Conscription Act but he did offer a way out He offered to any man who could put up 300 dollars that he could pay his way out of the war The Republican Party is who got the whole idea to have a draft got moving in the House The Conscription Act is The Federal Militia Act of 1862 which gave the president the authority to draft 300000 able-bodied men The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on Jan 1 1863 during the American Civil War declaring all slaves within any State or designated part of a StateThen in rebellionshall be then thenceforward and forever freewwwFunkandWagnallscom 2 The Draft Riots lasted four days On the first day there was not much violence just a lot of organization and planning The mayors house was attacked African-Americans was forced to hide and some telegraph poles were torn down The second day is where the riot turned into a full-scale rebellion The mayors house was attacked a second time Brooks and Brothers Clothing Store was attacked and more telegraph poles were torn down The third day entailed a few military battles involving General Sandford and Colonel Gardin General Putman had to go in to clean up their messes On the fourth and final day proclamations are made by the governor and the mayor Archbishop Hughes offers to address the Irish Soldiers are killed by the mob and General Putman
