The Returns and the Odyssey As Odysseus tries to go home he is seen changing from an arrogant young man who carelessly travels with a group of renegades to a more tempered and wiser person who desires more than anything to go home The early Odysseus was as reckless and careless with his words as he was in his actions After making himself comfortable in Polyphemus cave and eating his food and then narrowly escaping he shouted his real name adding insult to injury to the Cyclops which almost resulted in getting everyone killed Odysseus then incurred the wrath of Poseidon Polyphemus father for the rest of his journey after Polyphemus prayed to him asking for revenge Perhaps a wiser Odysseus left the island but his men still had a lot to learn their greed and recklessness continued to delay Odysseus their leader and their own return home on more than one occasion For example though Odysseus was warned by Circe not to touch the cattle that belonged to Helius his hungry men ate some of them anyway Further Odysseus men greedily opened a bag of wind that Aeolus gave to Odysseus thinking it contained gold causing their ship to be blown back to the Aeoluss island Odyssues men did these things while he slept which indicates that Odyseus was not yet a good leader But time changes everyone even the brave Odyseus and he eventually returned home reclaim his leadership Another apparent change in Odysseus character is his increasing readiness to go home The early Odysseus who was detained by Circe for a year didnt leave by his own will but was persuaded by his men to leave the island after a year and finally he convinced Circe to let them all leave the island Later when detained by Calypso whom loved him and offered him eternal life if he would stay he could not forget Penelope demonstrating his own desire to leave
