Education At the age of 16 William Randolph Hearst was enrolled in St Pauls School in Concord New Hampshire From 1982 to 1985 William attended Harvard University where he served as business manager of the student comic magazine In 1885 he was expelled from school for playing a practical joke on his professors His father then gave him the San Francisco Examiner Personal Life William Randolph Hearst was an American newspaper magnate who was born in San Francisco California His father George Hearst was a gold-mine owner as well as United States Senator from California His mother Phoebe Apperson Hearst was a schoolteacher from Missouri At the age of 10 William toured Europe with his mother At the age of 36 William began seeing Millicent Veronica Willson who was 16 years old at the time When Millicent was 22 years old she worked as a chorus girl in New York Young and beautiful Millicent married William in 1903 They had five sons together George Randolph Hearst William Randolph Hearst Jr John Randolph Hearst and twins Randolph Apperson Hearst and David Whitmire Hearst Although the couple stayed married until Williams death they separated in 1926 William was devoted to his mistress Marion Davies for more than 30 years Marion Davies was a popular movie actress and comedienne who starred in films expressly produced for her by Hearst himself Hearsts wife Marion lived in New York City There she was one of societys grandest dames a philanthropist Before she died in 1919 of influenza Phoebe could claim many noble accomplishments during her lifetime The life of William Randolph Hearst was depicted in a thinly disguised portrait in Orson Welles epic film Citizen Kane Hearst was aware of this films production and he used all his resources and influence in his attempt to halt it and prevent its release partially because he felt it insulted Marion Davies Welles and RKO studio resisted the pressure but the fight
