This report was done on an article in Newsweek Magazine called A Growing Coral Crisis written by Thomas Hayden October 30 2000 At a meeting of coral reef scientists including marine biologist Peter Edmonds of California State University North Ridge say that the coral reefs are the most endangered ecosystem on the planet A quarter of the worlds coral reefs are already gone and if global warming and hazardous fishing practices continue by Philippine and Indonesian fishermen all coral reefs as they now exist will be gone in the next 30 years The coral reefs in question lie within the tropical waters from Africa through Indonesia and the Philippines and out into the Pacific Coral are animal-like organisms that live be the millions on rocky structures they create themselves by secreting a mineral like substance resembling rock They capture single cell alga which is a continuous food supply The heat from global warming forces the algae to produce more oxygen At a about 85 degrees F the coral start to suffer from oxygen poisoning and start to spit out the algae The corals are bleached and unable to grow If the water continues to stay this warm the coral will die In 1998 during El Ninos warming of the pacific scientists recorded the worst-bleaching episode on record Scientists believe that in time the coral reefs should recover unless there is another heat wave or another bad storm The concern is that global warming produces more frequent storms and ocean warming Another concern is the controversial fishing practices by Philippine and Indonesian fishermen taking place on the coral reefs They use cyanide or dynamite to stun live reef fish for Cantonese food and the aquarium trade The fish are captured live but the coral reefs are smashed in the capture There are very few coral reefs preserved from this practice less than 1 The question is how to protect the coral reefs In the
