Erik Lashbrook ENGLISH SELF RELIANCE I shun father and mother and wife and brother when my genius calls me Ralph W Emerson writes in Self Reliance When it was time for Emerson to write or think he would rather be secluded from everyone even those closest to him like his parents and wife Self Reliance to rely on your own capabilities and your own self Should everyone be self reliant and not depend on any other person If you are to rely on only yourself you will realize how important other people are to you Emersons thoughts and ideas of being self reliant is not relevant to todays society Too many people depend on other people to survive They cant depend on only themselves We wouldnt need lawyers or police any more to fight our battles because we would be able to handle it ourselves Back in the late eighteen hundreds I can understand the need to depend on yourself because it was so different then Emerson said I am ashamed to think how easily we capitulate to badges and names to large societies and dead institutions He believes that when people join groups our crowds that they surrender to their rules and they lose more than they gain That they can do so much better if they were on their own It is easy today to get persuaded into different groups and abide by their rules and guidelines Not every person is bad Emerson also writes Every decent and well spoken individual affects and sways me more than is right he gets too persuaded by other peoples thoughts and he doesnt believe that he is being true to himself There is a time in every mans education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance that imitation is suicide Emersons thoughts back then are still true to todays society Being like everyone
