Plot The author describes the lottery at the beginning of the story as if an exciting and fun event is about to occur Jackson describes the exposition as a warm and sunny day on June 27th where the townspeople gather around the town around ten oclock in the morning The town is buzzing with eagerness and cant wait to see who wins this years lottery The children are not in school and are playing and talking and collecting stones It seems just like a typical day and everyone is living life as if nothing could go wrong The rising action in this story is when each head of household chooses a piece of paper from an old black box sitting on a three legged stool This has become tradition in this town Only one family chooses the piece of paper in the box that has a black dot on it once this paper is chosen then that is the family who has to draw again to see which family member is the chosen one The climax is at the end when you find out who the chosen person is However the prize is not a good one Mrs Hutchinson feels that her husband didnt have ample time to choose the piece of paper he desired and that the lottery has become unfair One of the towns people tell her to be a good sport about the situation Although how can you be a good sport when you know one of your family members would meet their demise that day she refuses to accept the situation at hand Once each of her family members choose a piece of paper she doesnt want to look at the paper she has in her hand The reason why she doesnt want to look at the piece of paper is because she knows the outcome All of her family members have chosen a blank piece of paper which
