The theme of The Yellow Sweater considers the thoughts apprehensions feelings mannerisms and actions of the protagonist a plump middle-aged businessman thinking of himself as quite successful and how he portrays his importance as he attempts to take advantage of the antagonist a young girl who has accepted a car ride which he had proposed At the same time it deals with the reactions of the young girl confronted with his actions 72 The author begins by brushing a picture of the protagonist He is depicted to be a salesman on his way back home after having concluded what he feels was a successful sales trip He appears quite proud of himself and his success is depicted by the orders he obtained his large car his cigar and the clothes he wears He will make any effort required to be noticed as the following excerpt indicates Outside a small village he was forced to slow down for a road repair crew He punched twice on the horn as he passed them basking in the stares of the yokels who looked up from their shovels and smiling at the envy showing on their faces 1 He has little consideration for hitchhikers considering them to be lazy bums yet when he notices a young girl walking along the road he goes out of his way to encourage her to accept a ride Here again the author underlines the businessmans ego being hurt when the young girl was unimpressed at the sight of his car as well as the fact that he was aroused by what he thought would be an impressionable young girl His initial intention was to get her attracted to him as they would drive along 214 Although the young girl reminded the businessman of his eldest daughter he quickly brushed aside the notion to concentrate on something which aroused in him an almost forgotten sense of adventure an
