The two works by Hairston and Flower What Happens When People Write explain the respective authors views on the difference between self-expression writing and writing for an audience In Hairstons exert she concentrates on the main points of explanatory and exploratory styles of writing Explaining what makes each style appropriate for certain papers Flower concentrates more on how to effectively convey ones message to the reader Listing the key aspects of what a writer should focus on when thinking about what the reader needs to hear Hairstons expert has an overall optimistic feel towards writing throughout the piece She maintains the point of view that both explanatory and exploratory writing can fulfill the need of ones assignment She does however break down what makes each style unique She first talks about explanatory writing where she states that when using this style a writer usually knows more about the topic Because the writer is explaining known facts to his audience he can create a more detailed outline On the other hand exploratory writing usually starts with only a partially formed idea The writer usually doesnt have all the information previously gathered for him Therefore leaving ones outline a little more space and messy with holes to fill in along the way Exploratory writing has a more open-ended approach to it Where a writer has an opportunity to insert ones own personal feel into the paper In Flowers exert she points out that a very important aspect of writing is being aware of ones audience A writer should know who one is writing to or for so that the writer can fine tune the paper to the needs and interests of the audience In this piece Flower states that three main points are essential in communicating to the audience First the writer should assume to what degree the reader knows about the topic at hand Then the author can state any information that
