New York Yankees The New York Yankees are one of the greatest teams in baseball history They have won the American League Championship 38 times and have won the World Series 26 times Few other teams are able to compete with this It all started on January 9 1903 Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the losing Baltimore franchise for 18000 dollars According to the New York Yankees Official Website they moved the team to Manhattan and the New York franchise was approved as part of the American League The team played in a poorly constructed all-wood park at 168th Street and Broadway Because the site was one of the highest spots in Manhattan the club was known as the Highlanders and their home field Hilltop Park What would soon become the most recognizable logon in sports history the interlocking NY made its first appearance on uniforms in 1909 It was actually created in 1877 by Lewis B Tiffany for a medal that was to be given to the New York Police Department In 1912 the pinstripes made their debut on the uniforms creating a recognizable look in sports Their uniforms have remained relatively untouched since then and have grown into one of the teams great traditions In April of 1913 the team was officially renamed the Yankees after moving to the Polo Grounds the home of the New York Giants On January 3 1920 the Yankees purchased the contract of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for 125000 dollars According to ESPN a year after the Yankees purchased Babe Ruth they issued a press release to announce the purchase of 10 acres of property in the west Bronx and their intentions on building a new stadium It would be baseballs first triple-decked structure With an advertised capacity of 70000 it would also be the first to be labeled a stadium In only 284 working days Yankee Stadium was ready for
