Although comics first appeared in newspapers at the turn of the 20th century it was in the 1930s that they took the shape that still defines them today This period saw the emergence of the superhero genre with the likes of Dick Tracy The Phantom and Flash Gordon But it was really during World War II that comic books reached their Golden Age At this point two publishers competed for the top spot One was DC Comics which was doing well with Superman Batman and Wonder Woman and the other was newcomer Marvel Comics which published Captain America The Sub-Mariner and Human Torch Hollywood studios have realized that theres a lot of money to be made from adapting comic books to the big screen especially after the huge success of the Superman Batman and Spider-Man franchises Lets take a look at some of the upcoming superhero movies Released on May 3 2002 the Sam Raimi film broke all kinds of records On its first weekend it grossed close to 115 million Its total gross was approximately 406 million domestically and it cashed in another 400 million overseas making it the biggest movie of the year Created by Stan Lee the first Spider-Man comic was published by Marvel in 1962 But its the story at the heart of the film that appealed to so many Peter Parker is a high school nerd whose luck changes after hes bitten by a radioactive spider and gains super powers as a result After the murder of his Uncle Ben he learns that with great powers comes great responsibility so he takes it upon himself to destroy the evil geniuses of New York City Thanks to the enormous success of the film the sequel is set for release in May 2004 Super powers Acute hearing even a foreshadowing spider sense super speed and the ability to spin webs and climb walls Arch nemeses Green Goblin Dr Octopus Kingpin
