Mary Liebes Feb 21 2001 Glenn Duncan Elementary Today I met with Glenn Duncans two special education teachers Mrs Ballard who works with children in grades 45 and 6 and Mrs Lynn who works with children in grades K-3 On this particular day I went with Mrs Ballard shadowing her and meeting the children she works with We began the morning by traveling to a fifth grade class where we worked with a young man named Paul who had been having problems understanding fractions As we pulled Paul to the side of the room for some one on one learning Mrs Ballard showed me the best style of learning that worked for him visual and hands on learning And for the next half an hour Paul Mrs Ballard and I worked together on fractions using blocks a special work book for Paul and a dry erase board all of which helped him to learn the concept of fractions From there we went to Mr Williams fifth grade class where I met and worked with a young man named Wade with math Wade seemed to be quiet and shy but he had no trouble expressing to me that he did not understand what they were doing in class As I sat beside Wade I asked him what they were working on and he explained to me the math they were to be doing but he also explained that he did not know how or what to do I looked over the problems they were to be working on and explained to Wade the sequence of steps that he needed to do to complete the problem After a few problems he finally started to get the hang of it but he was still not sure about himself or his work and he continually asked me if what he was doing was right He seemed to be very responsive to the one on one attention and
