CIVIL AIR PATROL3 During the first half of the twentieth century America as a nation suffered from short sightedness and a lack of vision to the future One of the places this is most notable is in the area of aviation and specifically military aviation The Civil Air Patrol is an all-volunteer organization that has strived to promote aviation advancement safety and public service I will briefly examine the History and mission of this organization that has often gone overlooked by many Americans By 1938 many Americans believed that the axis powers increasing in strength would soon be a threat to the United States One of these was the now famous Gill Robb Wilson Mr Wilson who would later become the New Jersey Aeronautics Commissioner convinced the Governor of New Jersey and the Mayor of New York City Fiorello La Guardia of the need for a civilian Air Defense force On December first 1941 the New Civil Air Patrol was born Seven days later the United States was attacked by Japan and entered into World war two Americas entrance into the war was with a poor maritime defense system on the East Coast The flow of vital supplies to Europe was almost completely choked off by German submarines that often operated within site of the US coastline The CAP was detailed to patrol the coast while Americas armed forces geared up for war Within a few short months nearly 40000 volunteers came from all over The men and women CIVIL AIR PATROL4 volunteers ranged from Over-age World War 1 fliers to aviation heroes and celebrities wwwcapgov pg2 These volunteers made a paltry 800 per flying day and provided
