It was June 17th 1915 when my great grandma Jenny Petersen left Copenhagen Denmark for Ellis Island She was only 17 years old when she stepped aboard the Frederik viii ship She left everything and everyone behind and took a leap of faith in hope for a better life Her journey from Denmark to Ellis Island shows how strong and courageous she was at such a young ageMy great grandma only paid 30 dollars for her one way ticket to a better life That 30 dollars was a lot to her and it put her in the lowest class on the ship Because it was the lowest class so any animals that were being shipped were being held in the same area that she was in Which made living conditions on the ship were very rough with more than 1000 people and many animals it was very cramped Many people got sick and died due to the close quarters and how unsanitary it was Unfortunately the mortality rate was 10 percent but no matter how dirty and cramped Jenny had such a drive to have a better life that she made it work She slept in bunk beds and was feed what we would call mush that only cost 60 cents a day With all that going against her she just new once she got to Ellis Island it would get better After seven long days she made it to Ellis Island As she stepped off the boat reality sunk in She was all alone with no one waiting for her in a new countryJenny made her way up to the building and was told she had to answer 29 legal questions If she missed one she would be put in legal detention You can be there up to one month Then the courts decide if you can stay or you
