Off in the distance somewhere behind me I could vaguely hear the voices of the others in the rafts floating down the rushing White Salmon River As our boat continued to float down the stream the green foliage on the banks slowly passed by The sunlight danced in our eyes off the ever changing river For the fourth time today the oars man yelled Cover In one swift motion we all quickly sank to the bottom of the boat jamming our feet into the crevices under the front seats Simultaneously we pulled our light weight plastic paddles along the side of the boat and threw our arms over the rear seat hanging on as if our lives depended on it Sitting there on the bottom of the raft I felt my heart beat with a nervous rhythm anticipating what was shortly due to come before us My palms and arm pits were already in a cold sweat The slow meandering wind wafting over the 42 degree Fahrenheit river sent shivers up and down my body even though I was warmly snuggled in a dry suit We were ready to face the awesome force of Mother Nature As we rounded a bend in the river we caught a glimpse of what fate had in store There was a dull roar now that surrounded us as it echoed off the high lava rock walls Slowly the mist directly ahead rose up from the river into the blue afternoon sky The moment we had been anticipating all day was right in front of us beckoning us with the music of the river We started to paddle hard quickly gaining speed surging over the top of the waterfall The intensity of the waters defining roar grew louder and louder with every passing second Once again the oars man yelled Cover and we all scurried into our protective positions As the raft neared the edge I could see
