Columbus The Hero Christopher Columbus discovered America Well that is what they teach us in school But Does he really deserve all the credit for discovering the Americas Did he really discover that the world was Round Does he deserve to be called a hero That remains to be seen However I will show you The Reasons why I personally do not feel Columbus is a hero Many people say that Columbus is not a hero because the Native Americans were here before him Well dont we credit Marco Polo for finding the lands of China We do We dont say The Chinese were there first so you didnt discover it no we say that Marco Polo was a great adventurer who ventured farther than Europeans had before him It is this that leads me to my first Area of analysis Columbus was not the first to come to the Americas from Eurasia and Africa We have all heard the story of Leif Eriksson He was a Brave Viking who sailed to the Americas around 1000 AD He landed in what we now call Nova Scotia Eriksson was in the Americas for a full year before returning to Iceland This fact tells us that Columbus was not the first European to sail to the New World Columbus is not the hero here Eriksson should be the hero Students in American Schools are given off for Columbus Day This is a day to celebrate the life of the man who found America It is this assertion which will lead me into my next area of analysis Columbus Found The Bahamas Not America When the Nina Pinta and The Santa Maria came across to Atlantic Ocean to the Americas they landed in The Bahamas After he ha discovered the Bahamas he stopped He never actually set a single foot on the American mainland That is an accomplishment which can only be attributed to Amerigo Vespucci
