American Sign Language The first time I met a deaf person was about two years ago She was a regular customer at this bar that I use to work at in the city It seemed like she found comfort in who and what was familiar to and with her She would always carry around a notebook and pen just in case someone didnt quite understand her she would just write it down She would try her best not to have to write down what she was trying to say and after a while we never need her to She was always happier that way We would try to help her when we saw that people didnt understand her but she showed us that she never really needed our help just our understanding I always tried to understand what it would be like to be in her shoes I tried not to show the frustration in trying to understand her sometimes because I can only imagine how frustrated she was trying to help us understand as well I put off taking American Sign Language ASL because I did not know what to expect The past two semesters at school I had a deaf girl in my class I would end up watching her translators more than the teacher The language just seemed more interesting to me than Spanish Italian or any other language I seemed to struggle with I know a second language is usefully but ASL seems like more than a second language Maybe that is because I would look at the deaf world as disabled not realizing that its is a culture Now it seems like learning ASL would be an advantage to broaden my prospective
