A Persuasive Letter: Abigail Williams, Please Atone For Your Sins (The Crucible)

This is a persuasive letter written to Abigail Williams, the main character in The Crucible. The letter's goal is to convince Abigail to atone for her role in the Salem witch trials. The letter is written by a friend of Abigail's who was with her in the forest. The friend notes that they should go right their wrongs and cleanse themselves of sins as citizens of Salem and children of God. The friend accuses Abigail of greed and arrogance and the demise of Salem if people get hung. The friend also pities Abigail for how her parents treated her after seeing her perform a mortifying act.

"While many of us know the story of Abigail and the Salem Witch Trials, I have never seen the story presented in this manner before. First, you wrote a very powerful, compelling, and intriguing letter. You very clearly communicated the letter's purpose and stayed focused on that purpose throughout your writing. Second, the content of your letter is also excellent. You used key points from the story to communicate the feelings of desperation and urgency. While you have a perfect introduction, I feel as if the letter's conclusion is lacking. Consider elaborating on it a bit and rounding of the letter by, once again, vehemently imploring that Abigail does the correct thing. Third, the formatting of your letter is perfect. I am not sure the parameters of the assignment, but, depending on them, consider starting the letter with "Dear Abigail" and ending it with a complimentary close (Sincerely, ...). Last, overall you have an excellent command of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation, with only a couple of errors found throughout your writing."
