Plot summary of Edgar Allan Poes The Murders in the Rue Morgue In Poes Murders in the Rue Morgue a mystery that at first seems too complex to solve is ultimately disentangled by a detectives reliance on analytical reasoning The narrator along with his friend the protagonist detective C Auguste Dupin become fascinated in a newspaper article about two gruesome murders The victims Madame LEspanaya and her daughter Camille were murdered in the middle of the night in their fourth floor apartment Neighbors were awakened by loud shrieks coming from the womens residence About ten neighbors together with two policemen forced their way into the building By this time the screams had stopped and two voices could be heard coming from the room Their house had been ransacked a bloody razor blade lay on a chair long thick tresses of gray hair were found dabbled with blood apparently pulled out from the roots valuables were found strewn about the floor and under the bed was found an open iron safe containing nothing but a few useless papers The body of Camille was found stuffed head down in the chimney she had been strangled The body of Madame LEspanaya was found in a small paved yard in the rear of the building her throat was cut so severely that when she was lifted up her head fell off her body was brutally mutilated The paper concluded To this horrible mystery there is not as yet we believe the slightest clew The next day with additional information printed in the paper Dupin became more interested in the progress of the investigation The seemingly insoluble mystery and the polices lack of insight becomes Dupins main antagonists Testimony provided by neighbors and acquaintances of the murdered women asserted that the mother and daughter were respectable people and very affectionate towards each other Witnesses that entered the apartment the night of the murders concurred that there
