In this article Hacker tackles the controversial and often elusive issue of racism It was racism that led Europeans to bring Africans from Africa to the New World for the slave trade at the rate of 100000 per year for 200 years It is that same racism that makes America Before reading this article my conception on racism in America was that it was something of a past time I never on a first hand encounter have witnessed any sort of racism that could be classified as truly damaging The biggest insight that Ive gained from this article is the lone fact that white people have total misconceptions of blacks and cannot even comprehend the ways in which blacks struggle as a minority in America This article made me frustrated It didnt teach me any major new ideas that I didnt already know However it did teach me that the plight of the black community isnt acknowledged unless addressed by a white person I will say that Hacker points out the hypocrisy of White America with a certain kind of detail that is not often seen How often have we heard conservative White Americans make the statement My grandfather or father came here from the old country usually referring to some European country and worked hard and saved every possible penny and pulled himself up by the you know what and made something offor himself He didnt need any government assistance or hand- out he did it the old fashion way hard work These statements when made are usually in reference to the African- American minority group The implication being that African-Americans have not made it due to some innate fault of their own These statements reek of racist rhetoric because the obvious implications are that citizens of African origin are somehow inferior to citizens of European origins It is this mentality in which white people mold the conditions that blacks must endure Some
