In its review of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf the Houston Chronicle called the novel Funny courageous and wise a sly evocation of the Depression South Throughout the novel there are great examples of these characteristics Funny-Idgie Threadgoode was always telling someone one of her stories For instance on page 394 Idgie tells Patsy Neal that she caught a catfish so big that they couldnt get it out of the water They took a picture of it and the picture weighed forty pounds This is just one of many little antidotes that Idgie told that made the book funny Courageous-Ruth Jamison displayed courage throughout the book She lived with an abusive husband for a number of years She went on to leave this man to live with another woman which took a lot of courage Also in the book Idgie and Ruth opened a caf during the late twenties During this time period women did not participate in managerial positions On top of opening their own business the ladies served African Americans They received a lot of opposition from the KKK Ku Klux Klan for this practice The two ladies were everyday people with their own philosophies who went against the grain They were two renegades of their time Wise-Ninny Threadgoodes knowledge and life experiences helped her console Evelyn Couch An example of this was her advice to Evelyn to look to the lord for help After attending a church Evelyn started on the road to recovery Mrs Threadgoodes experiences through menopause helped her in diagnosing Evelyn as to having a low estrogen count Overall Ninnys wisdom helped Evelyn Sly evocation-The book provided us with information about the depression through subtle hints about what was going on Through characters like Railroad Bill and Smokey Lonesome we learned about the hardships going on at the time We were not force feed about what was going on
