In the book Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes a retarded man named Charlie Gordon was given a chance to become a genius through an operation Charlie Gordon was the subject of an experiment that increases the intelligence The experiment worked and Charlie Gordon became a genius But he had a lot of emotional problems and realized how badly he had been treated At the end he became retarded again So was Charlie Gordon better off having the operation or not Im not really sure When Charlie was stupid he was happy He thought he had friends and that everyone liked him But when he became smart he realized that his so called friends werent really his friends at all He himself said When I was retarded I had lots of friends Now I have no one Oh I know lots of people Lots and lots of people But I dont have any real friends Not like I used to have in the bakery Not a friend in the world who means anything to me and no one I mean anything topage 174 But being smart was his dream On page 3 he says I tolld him because all my life I wantid to be smart and not dumb and my mom always tolld me to try and lern just like Miss Kinnian tells me but its very hard to be smart andeven when I lern something in Miss Kinnians class at school I ferget a lot So having this operation was his one chance to be smart When Charlie found out that he was going to become dumb again he kind of panicked He was like Ive got to try to hold onto some of the things I learned Please God dont take it all away page 202 Being smart was really important to him The reason why I dont know if Charlie was better off having the operation is because I dont
