The story comes in three parts Part I The Great Disruption seems a slightly contrived attempt to introduce an image of social upheaval parallel to the Great Depression This Great Disruption is a breakdown in social order over a period from the 1960s to the 1990s common to developed industrial societies signalled by indicators of social dysfunction such as rising crime rates and less formal social disorder breakdown of family structures and decline in trust as measured by survey results Underlying data are accessible through the Fukuyama website httpwwwmasongmuffukuyam These indicators are taken as negative measures of social capital though the author does acknowledge that using social deviance as a proxy for social capital does have some possibly serious analytical drawbacks The author is also not well served by the designers of the book jacket here the rather tiny displacement featured on the front cover serves as well as any other critical commen tary to call into question the emphasis attached by the author to the allegedly profound transformation under study The argument in essence is that this technology-driven breakdown of social order from the 1960s to the 1990s was initiated with widespread use of contraceptive technologies and widespread introduction of information technologies which transformed the workplace into a place of womens work There is a cultural backdrop in the rise of moral relativism The essence of the shift in values that is at the center of the Great Disruption is then the rise of moral individualism and the consequent miniaturization of community p 91 But there was also a special role for women The resulting social disorder was mediated through the rise of female labour-force participation and the breakdown of family structures consequent on these technological innovations and the emergence of the information society The author comes perilously close to arguing that it was feminism and The Pill that led to social disorder but recovers and focuses on the need to re-establish male
