Should the topic of evolution be taught in schools This is a question and also a controversy in the United States The first amendment of the Constitution does not allow the teachings of religion in schools in which it states that there will be a separation of church and state Evolution to many people needs to be taught in schools which these people are referred to as evolutionists but on the other hand some people that do not believe that things evolve but that God created the world and everything on it These types of people do not want evolution to be taught in schools and therefore these people are called creationists or that they believe that God is the reason why humans and everything else exist today One of the biggest arguments over whether or not evolution should be taught in schools is of course the trial of the century as it was often called This trial is formally known as The Scopes Monkey Trial which is written by the author Edward J Larson In his book entitled Summer for the Gods he examines before during and after the trial in revealing to the public what actually was taking place during this time Before the trial had ever taken place scientists were starting to discover that the theory of evolution was not pure fiction but had some truth in it In a small farm in Piltdown Common Sussex fragments of a skull were found and scientists linked them to an ancestral species of the modern day human As time went on more and more evidence was found by scientists further proving that humans may have evolved from the ape In 1922 William Jennings Bryan a politician who was also a creationist had an article in the New York Times about restricting the teachings of evolution Fundamentalism started to take shape within the Protestant church during this time These fundamentalists were fueling the antievolution crusade
