Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and written and created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan Modern Family is an American sitcom that follows the daily happenings of three families living in Los Angeles California Haley Alex and Luke children of Phil and Claire Lily the adopted child of Cam and Mitchell and Manny step-son to Jay and biological son to his mother Gloria all interact in different ways on the show with the ultimate goal of laughter The show has experienced much success and popularity since its debut in 2009 The show features characters who are diverse in their race sexuality and age and is intended to show its viewers depictions of average life in a modern family Given the premise of the show it is surprising to see such old-fashioned discourses representing children and childhood on the show In episode S05E05 entitled The Late Show we are presented with representations of children and youth that are anything but modern The writers employ ancient traditional Western representations of children and youth that are rooted in ideas of developmentalism romanticism and biological determinism These representations are then exaggerated for comedic effect In this episode the adults of each household have planned an expensive adults only dinner and are left to figure out what to do with their children Each child left without parents is seen to embody certain stereotypes that often contradict with other representations of children on the show With such emphasis on the modern aspect of the show it is important to recognize that the way children are represented in this series is far from modern and in fact reinforces stereotypes that are hundreds of years old These reinforced ideas are of a particular interest to childhood and youth studies as they prove to be well disguised in a show filled with light hearted comedy In the first scene that we see Haley she is dressed in a contemporary outfit with modern accessories and
