It is not easy to adapt a novel especially when the writer is Earnest Hemingway The Sun Also Rises is one of the successful Hemingway story It portrays the lives of a group of American and British expatriates that Hemingway called Lost Generation whose early adulthood was consumed by the First World War This story was adapted in 1957 by Henry King as the director and Peter Viertel as the screenwriter As an adaptation is a critical task that translates a narrative from one medium to another Desmond and Hawkes gave a pertinent question How does a filmmaker transfer a novel into a screenplay when the screenplay is roughly two-thirds shorter in length 85 To do so many adaptation techniques were adopted by the director and the screenwriter of the film that included cutting reducing skipping and adding Consequently the film was differently judged some consider it as a close adaptation while others think that the film is a loose adaptation However The Sun Also Rises movie remains an intermediate adaptation although the use of many adaptation techniques One of the adaptation techniques used in The Sun Also Rises is the exposition skipping The film opens with a narrator that starts by reading the Ecclesiastes quote from Hemingways epigraph and finishes by telling the audience that the story is happening in Paris in 1922 Then we meet Jake Barnes the main character of the story as he arrives at the newspaper agency where he works Before he enters the agency however he is approached by an old war friend and has a short conversation with him On the other hand the novel begins with the description of Robert Cohn giving by Jake Barnes the novels narrator and protagonist This description tells readers about Cohen origin us a wealthy Jewish man and how was his life in America before he decided to move to Paris with Frances Clyne his manipulative girlfriend According to Desmond and Hawkes
