In the book To Be a Slave by Julius Lester a collection ofinterviews it discusses how the slaves want freedom They got freedombut this freedom wasnt how the slaves thought it would be like Beforethe slaves were freed they expected freedom would be easy the realitywas upsetting and different The slaves expected freedom to be easy They didnt think that freedomwould be hard They thought that they wouldnt have to follow ordersanymore like they did when they were in slavery The slaves thoughtthat they wouldnt get beaten anymore They assumed that they would beable to do whatever they wanted unlike having to follow orders likethey did when they were slaves The slaves thought that instead ofhaving to depend on the Southern whites for work food and clothingthey will be able to do independently The slaves felt that after theywere freed they would have somewhere to go and somewhere to live Theythought that they would be able to go to school and get an educationThe slaves considered that they would be able to vote after they were atliberty of slavery The slaves were very disappointed when they found out that all of theirexpectations were wrong In the book it said With freedom theysuddenly found themselves in a position were they had to supply theirown needs All were willing and able to do so but to do so theyrequired land of their own and farm equipment to get started 144The slaves could not afford land and farm equipment To be reallyfree it was necessary that they be able to make a living bythemselves 144 They couldnt make a living on their own because theslaves couldnt find jobs The slaves still had to depend on theSouthern whites for work food and clothing The whites created sharecropping a new system that hurt black slaves The slaves still couldntvote the black former slaves had to be economically independent from awhite South that was built on black slavery and resented
