Powder by Tobias Wolff is a short story that gets to the point and uses a boy who vividly recalls a day ski trip with his father as the setting to convey a clear obstacle that is overcome with both characters ending up learning from Wolffs choice of setting the narrator as this boy recalling this event as he is older makes the story enjoyable straightforward and easy to follow for a reader In reading we learn a lot about how this boy is a controlling clear headed type of person much unlike his father who shows how he can love him despite the things that he has done wrong and despite the fact he knows his parents are going to split We learn a lot about the type of man the father is and what kind of father he is through the story of this boys epic memory From the beginning to the end the story just seems to fall right into place as a readerWhen we first find out that it is snowing out hard the road home is blocked and the boy and his father need to make it home for Christmas Eve we are instilled with a sense of worry that piles and piles from that point on This draws in the reader tremendously and in a short story such as this that holds tremendous importance The narrator conveys himself as an uptight boy who worries and constantly maintains his readiness and awareness for whatever may come next Up until the end there is no sense of relief or calmness in the tone of the narrator In my opinion in such a short story the ability to form so much suspense and worry keeps the reader reading and makes the story worth the whileWhat I personally like about this story is that there is plenty of room left for reflection and filling in
