Literature ReviewAutobiographical memory involves the retention and retrieval of experiences from ones personal past Research on autobiographical memory has in general not paid a great deal of attention to gender differences Even though the vast majority of studies related to autobiographical memories have included male and female participants the differences among the genders have often been of secondary interestIn studies where the effects of gender have been identified the results indicate that females have superior autobiographical memories compared to males For example studies have documented how compared to males females elicit more detailed and in-depth autobiographical memories Friedman Pines 1991 Pillemer Wink DiDonato Sanborn 2003 Pohl Bender Lachmann 2005 Ross Holmberg 1992 Seidlitz Diener 1998 and are faster to recall their autobiographical memories with more precision Davis 1999What is most striking about these studies that have been carried out is the level of emotional information in the memories Women tend to use a much greater quantity of emotional descriptions when describing their autobiographical memories Adams Kuebli Boyle Fivush 1995 Bauer et al 2003 Fivush et al 2003 Hess et al 2000 In addition not only do women include a greater number of references to their own emotional states but also include a greater number of references to the emotional states of othersBloise and Johnson 2007 carried out a study to evaluate whether women recall more emotional information than men Participants read a script containing emotional and neutral information with the instruction to think of advice to give to the characters of the script The results showed that women recalled more emotional information than menThe finding that women recalled more emotional information than men validates research showing that from an early age girls tend to include more emotional information in their talk about past autobiographical experiences eg Fivush 1998 and that women include more emotional information in their reports of personal experiences later in life eg Davis 1999However they
