A dull thunderclap rumbled across the heavens omniously as the storm moved slowly off to the west The rain and sleet drove through sporadically in the fickle winds Warm yellow beacons of the street lamps burned through the night offering a brief respite from the cutpurses and other denizins of the alleys In the distance flashes of lightning illuminated a tall spire perched near the upper class district casting faint flickering shadows down upon some of the lavish estates below A hooded woman drove strode quicky through an archway into an open courtyard towards a pair of mammoth wooden doors set into the slick marble of the tower She pulled the crowl of her robe down further as the wind shifted directions blowing stinging sleet into parts of her exposed cheek She clenched her left arm around an ornate scrollcase a slender incisior of some exotic creature and a small velvet satchel Muddy water splashed and slurped with each step soaking and staining her soft doeskin boots and the bottom of the robe Right now she couldnt care all that she wanted was to be out of the elements preferably by a roaring fire with a small flask of wine She stepped up the two stairs with one fluid motion to small raised platform The doors loomed over her almost three times her body height Forks of lightening glimmered off the brass hinges and silver handles illuminating to the trained eye thin orante runes seared into the hard wood of the door She reached out and grasped the latch grimacing as the icy metal sucked the wamth from her hand with a hungry abandon She stood in the rain for several seconds as a series of runes glowed faintly in turn before a faint click was audible from the otherside Despite their towering height the doors swung effortlessly open at her touch Beyond them stood a long spiral staircase arching up into
