Happiness desirable as an end There are many theories about happiness Some argue that material possessions and money bring joy Others argue that popularity can make a person more or less qualify to be happy Any way you look at it people think that the degree of happiness that an individual experiences is established by the outside world Other opinions are centered on the idea that happiness is not a physical attribute but instead a state of mind In other words believing in God and an afterlife is enough for them Most of us bundle different words at times to create a general image of people being happy and having a good time Words like pleasure fun and enjoyment have the same meaning however happiness is very different Happiness does not come and go like other feelings instead happiness stay with us no matter how difficult life can get or regardless of the emotion being experienced I totally agreed with Mills Theory of Value which says that achieving happiness is the ultimate good and the only thing desirable as an end and that all other desires or values are a way or a part of achieving happiness p361 Happiness is an emotion All emotions have causes that can be understood and controlled Accumulating moments of pleasure does not cause the emotion of happiness On the contrary happiness is a long lasting enduring enjoyment of life it is being in love with living It is also our reward for achieving good character and values in life However as Mill mentioned some of these pleasures are associated with virtue so we need to distinguish the fact that some kinds of pleasure are more desirable and have more quality than others Therefore the quantity of the pleasure is irrelevant Sometimes this pattern of just waiting for happiness to come to us can take away our chances to feel happy In todays society being unhappy
