Heterogamy also known as intermarriage is the marriage between partners from different social racial religious ethnic or cultural backgrounds These marriages are more likely to break down due to the differences the spouses share between each other Different views may arise in the marriage that may cause conflict which both may not have a solution too Factors such as a persons cultural background race religion etc play a very important role in compatibility when looking for a life partner These factors may be over looked by lust or love for the person when deciding to get married but can come into play later on in the marriage This is when the marriage is likely to crumble because in most cases love is not the variable needed in for a successful marriage Later on in a marriage when the initial desire and passions for one anther has faded one might be left with the realization that they married someone that they are no longer compatible with In the text book differences in religion is seen to be a significant factor in the break down in heterogamous marriages This is key because when a conflict occurs in a interfaith marriage where one or both partners refuse to sacrifice their religious in order to salvage the marriage therefore not able to comprise which later can lead to divorce Also when children become a factor in a marriage this too can play a role in the failure of the marriage The couple must decide what faith identity to provide for their children In a interfaith marriage providing a faith identity for the children involved is difficult because each spouse may feel that their religion is the best for the childs upbringing In conclusion heterogamous marriages break down due to the significant differences between both parties These differences are so influential to ones character that it makes it extremely difficult for one to sacrifice these differences
