Interactive teaching and learning can be defined as a broad set of educational activities or environments where teachers and students interact or collaborate in the learning process Klein1997 When contrasted to traditional teaching methods interactive teaching models are usually student centred when students are active participants of the teaching and learning process In England and Wales National Strategies promote pedagogies that emphasise interactive class teaching This paper discusses the nature of interactive teaching and the effectiveness of this teaching method in improving Religious Education lessonsThe school in which the author has been placed as no specific policy in terms of interactive teaching It has however developed a new style of curriculum to run alongside the usual timetable called Curriculum 2012Curriculum 2012 was launched at September 2012 with year seven pupils with its aim to deliver a skills based interactive curriculum for a week every term This week is called the development block where students are taken off timetable and have the choice of what they are going to learn and what work they produce See Appendix AThis style of teaching is completely student centred as teachers take up the role of facilitator not deliverer Curriculum 2012 has been a huge success within the school and will be delivered to year seven to year nine from September 2013At a Religious Studies department level there are no specific measures in place to develop interactive teaching in the classroom However Religious Education does take an active role within the development blocks creating fun interactive tasks for the students to develop their knowledge and understanding for religious issuesFor many years observation of traditional classroom discourse has revealed it to be heavily dominated by teacher talk with the largest amount of talking being teachers making statements Hargreaves2003 This traditional way of teaching found itself becoming heavily criticised when standards across Britain dropped significantly The turn of the twentieth century led to a focus on standards across all schools in
