This is the study of two narrative styles in two different short stories ODOUR OF CHRYSENTEMUMS by DH Laurence and A ROSE FOR EMILY BY William Faulkner These two stories have a common trait that is having for principal character a woman however the way each narrator is presenting the personage to the reader is particular This paper will show how the narrative treatment and descriptions of the characters will affect the stories and the readers The story of ODOUR OF CHRYSENTEMUMS has the particularity of depicting Elizabeths personage with respect As the author describes her she was a tall women of imperious mien handsome with definite black eyebrowsPar4 p345 the reader notices that the character belongs to a certain social class The narrator is not describing Elizabeth accurately from a physical point the use of the word handsome is generally used when describing men Men in the context of the story are regarded as being strong hard working coal miners Therefore the word handsome is used here implying that she might not be very physically attractive but is on the other hand a strong woman and that would be where her true beauty resides The second point discussed in this study come in she saw herself in his silence and pertinacity she saw the father in her childs indifference to all but himselfpar36p347 in this sentence the narrator is gets inside the character He indeed brings out the feelings of Elizabeth which denotes of a certain caring and sympathy for her DH Laurence is willing to make the readers aware of the characters state of mind in order to triggers sympathy from the readers The life of Elizabeth is revolving and regulated by her husband He puts an emphasis on the feeling of distress that she is feeling The narrator in this story is biased because he can relate to the environment of the story The writer was indeed born in
