The Resistance of a Wire Background Information Resistance in electricity is the property of any substance that can slow down the flow of an electrical current to an extent A substances resistance in an electrical circuit determines the amount of current flowing through the circuit for any given voltage that is applied to the circuit The resistance of a substance is determined by the nature of the atoms from which it is made its dimensions and its temperature Resistance is expressed in terms of Ohms cm at 20C An electrical conductor is any substance that hinders the flow of an electric current in a circuit very little The main difference between a good conductor and an insulator is that of magnitude rather than material because all substances can conduct electricity to some extent although some atoms are better constructed for conducting than others A good conductor of electricity such as most metals may have a conductivity billions of times as great or more than the conductivity of a good insulator such as glass or mica because of its atomic structure Metals on an atomic level have wider gaps between their combined nuclei and giant structure making it easier for electrons to flow between them while resistance is caused when there is an obstruction in the flow and when there is greater distance that the electrons have to travel Aim My aim is to examine the resistance of a wire when the length and or diameter of it is changed Predictions I predict that the resistance of the wire will increase when the length of the wire increases because this means there will be further distance for the electrons to travel along and more atom nuclei for the electrons to collide with therefore causing more collisions and more obstruction I also predict that the resistance of the wire will decrease with the increase of the thickness of the wire because
