In Hornsbys Surfing the Net for Community she uses Durkheims ideas of regulation and integration as the necessary ingredients for stable societies and applies them to analyze electronic gatherings as Durkheimian Net societies Durkheim describes a society as any form of ongoing and patterned interactions in groups He is clear in stating that it is these continuous and ongoing relations that define a society because this is how we discover the meaning of life beyond just our own thoughts and goals The more interactions that we partake in the more we are reminded of the concerns and interests of that of our social groups This he states is a struggle because we are constantly going against the goals of the rest of our group Durkheim then ponders the question of how society can maintain itself if people are constantly going against the well wishes of the rest of the group His answer social solidarity Social solidarity he argues is the state of unity or social harmony that exists when members of a group or society at large share the same moral rules and practices The process of a group learning to think act and feel in the way that would maintain the same moral rules and practices in their society is socialization The two levels at which groups can achieve socialization are regulation and socialization Regulation refers to the institutional level of socialization while integration refers to the level of socialization that occurs in the everyday experiences and interactions of groups Research has shown that there is evidence of regulation and integration in many electronic gatherings just as there would be in a normal and stable society Hornsby takes this idea of Durkheim and aruges that there are three mechanisms of regulation that occur on the Net defining rules of conduct rules that point to specific behaviors as appropriate or inappropriate for the internet communicating and clarifying rules of conduct electronic gatherings should be
