How many times have you been asked a question and you lie about theanswer For example you skip a work day because you do not feel likegoing in and when your boss asks you where you were you tell him youwere was sick How about when your cell phone company calls because younever paid your bill and you tell them the check is in the mail In thearticle The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson the author discussesthe different types of lies people tell and why they are told she alsoexplains how they are harmful The first type of lie that Ericsson discusses is called the white lie The author claims this lie is told because the truth will cause moredamage than lying Although this lie avoids confrontation and you arebeing soupier to the person seeking your advice by telling them thatlie Secondly the author talks about lies which are referred to asfacades Facades are described as putting on another face or makingpeople believe something that you not These are bad because theyseduce others into an illusion and make you look and feel like somethingyou are not The next type of lie that is mentioned is how people ignorethe plain facts These are lies that may not be told but are a result ofactions These are harmful because it appears as though you are justoverlooking something in order to avoid a confrontation The author alsodiscusses stereotypes and cliches meaning that you are lying to yourselfby making judgment on people without getting to know them just becausethey are part of a certain group They are negative and they separatepeople Stereotyping can also lead to racism sexism and ageismLastly the author talks about out-and-out lies These are describedas lies people tell because they get tired of trying to figure out thereal meanings behind things This is harmful because you know the truthalready so it appears a confrontation is just trying to be started
