The story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is told in the first person point of view by Jane She is living in a house with her husband John his sister and many workers The story starts out with Jane talking about the house and how she thought it was odd that her husband John had gotten the house for so cheap She wondered what was wrong with it and why it had been empty before they had rented it out because their house was being worked on It was a huge Victorian house with lots of land and gardens on its property It had stables and a fountain and a lot of big windows in every room as well as separate sleeping quarters for the people who worked there Jane is mentally ill and her husband John is a doctor and is treating her He chose to rent the house because it was in the country and far away from town which meant Jane could have plenty of fresh air and time to think Jane was kept on phosphates phosphites and a lot of different tonics Jane was restricted to her bedroom for the 3 months that they were to be staying there The room was huge it had a big canopy bed in the middle of the room which was bolted to the floor big barred windows that looked onto the property a bench near the window for sitting rings in the walls for chains wooden floors and a yellow wallpaper with a weird pattern made up of lots of lines Jane liked to stare out at the windows at the world that she wasnt allowed to participate in A couple of times she complained to her husband that she hated the wallpaper and wanted to get rid of it He didnt pay attention to her and told her to get used to it Jane liked to write in a journal that
