Who can I be friends with that will drink with me Koren Zailckas asks in the book Smashed A Story of a Drunken Girl A shy fourteen year old girl who has low self-esteem puts her social stock into drinking She uses drinking as a socially safe way to quickly gain friends but ends up an alcoholic Slowly Koren grows to idolize drinking alcohol as a replacement of her family because she looks to alcohol to make her more entertaining to hopefully get the attention and purpose for living that she craves Disappointingly she makes bad decisions and in college she does not have her parents guidance Because she does not have someone guiding her down the right path she goes through dark times in her life where she goes down the wrong path Through her story she tells of the positive and negative effects of seeking alcohol as her personal idol---something she thought she could never live withoutKoren Zailckas begins writing her story in eighth grade as a fourteen-year-old girl seeking popularity She consistently attaches herself to one peer and the connection is primarily alcohol Natalie Burke is her first peer who Koren badly wants to befriend ironically they are foils Koren analyzes life yet she describes Natalie as an earthquake the type of natural disaster that most draws me to her 250-55 When at Natalies home Natalie brings out alcohol for Koren to try They end up becoming drinking friends through middle school and high school as Koren is the mousy assistant and Natalie becomes the knife-throwing magician 261-66 Later in college she befriends Hannah Tess and her sorority sisters that secretly drink which make it harder for Koren to get over her social and alcoholic addictions The friends Koren interacts with end up just being a person to drink with a partner in crime and eventually an arrow that breaks her heart She dates many boys including
