When I set out to prove that slavery was more profitable than indentured servitude I could not understand how the plantation owners could own slaves even if it was more profitable than indentured servitude because it was morally wrong I found out that the English colonists were racists who believed that white Europeans were a superior race to black Africans They even thought that they were helping the African slaves by teaching them about Christianity The American Nation 130 Slavery was a one-time purchase for plantation owners and even the children of the slaves belonged to the owners In contrast indentured servants signed a contract with the plantation owner that stated how many years they would work after that they were free to leave Colonial America 111 Their owners never set slaves free Slavery was more profitable for plantation owners than indentured servitude because indentured servants had to be paid and slaves did not Saari 202 A slave is a person bound in servitude to another person as an instrument of labor The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language Slaves were taken from their homes in Africa forced onto boats and sold by traders when they arrived in America Many Africans had useful farming skills that helped the plantation owners develop their farms Slaves had no basic human rights There was no limit to how many hours they worked in a day They werent allowed to leave the plantation - ever They were given very limited amounts of food and clothing just enough for survival They did not have freedom of religion They werent even permitted to spend time with their family on holidays They were not given any money for all their hard labor Even their children became the property of the slave owner There was no time off for slaves
