Abraham Maslow is considered to be the founder of Humanistic Psychology Maslows humanistic perspective focuses on the motivation of people to grow psychologically the influence of interpersonal relationships on a persons self-concept and the importance of choice and self-direction in striving to reach ones potentialHockenbury Hockenbury 2001 p 11 In order to visualize the different stages or levels involved we can look at Maslows hierarchy of needs I chose this topic because I found it very interesting to see how our needs change as we do We all have different stages in our lives and the hierarchy of needs follow that cycle Physiological The physiological needs include oxygen food water sleep shelter clothing sex etc These needs must be met in order to go to the next level For instance if I were to go without food or water for a day or so I would not be able to satisfy my higher needs on say the safety level because I would not feel physically well or safe Being without food I would feel stuck or weak like I couldnt go on until my need of food was met Safety Security and protection from physical and emotional harm are included within this level For me protection from emotional harm is of major importance If I do not feel the safety or security then I do not get involved By not getting involved with someone or a situation of such then it interrupts later stages of the hierarchy levels Social love and belonging These needs include affection acceptance belonging and friendship These are very important also Not only must previous need levels be satisfied but also this stages needs in order for subsequent stages to exist In our day-to-day life we exhibit these needs in our desires to marry have a family be a part of a community a member of a
