In the 1800s the relationship between the Indians and the American settlers was not very concrete In fact it was pretty much non-existent On several occasions Indians and settlers confronted and sometimes resided in peace and other times in bloodshed In the spring of 1811 Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was not on good terms with the white man Tecumseh knew that settlers were growing in population and one day would destroy them They needed to act now when they still had if not an advantage but and equal opportunity to win their land back Tecumseh went before the Choctaws and Chickasaws in a desperate attempt to unite In return a Choctaw chief told them that the white men were their friends and that they would not betray them if they trust them In the 1830s the two tribes were forcibly moved by the white men to Oklahoma Another memorable interaction with the Indian was in1804 during the Lewis and Clark expedition The team enlisted a French-Canadian trapper Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife Sacajawea Sacajawea was a Shoshone Indian and a huge help to the expedition In the summer August of 1805 the group reached the Missouri River the land of the Shoshone Indians Since the group of white men had an Indian woman not to mention a Shoshone Indian they had a very peaceful stay in Indian Territory Sacajawea secured horses and people to help carry their supplies With out Sacajawea the journey would have defiantly been a lot more dangerous and harder than it was In the summer of 1805 the Americans again met with the Indians with another attempt to convert them to Christianity This is another example of Indians and Americans living together through thick and thin Red Jacket came into play when Reverend Cram of the Boston Missionary Society met with Iroquois chiefs Red Jacket then stepped up and told the white people his thought about religion and who
