The year is 1609 Two years after the founding of the once hopeful prosperous colony of Jamestown Virginia has become what is known as the starving time A period in which no more than sixty men women and children had survived during this time of agony and pain A time in which food was scarce and death was inevitable Gloomy days had loomed over the colonists of Jamestown Virginia Captain John Smith the original colonizer of Jamestown is the author of this story of struggle and survival His purpose in writing this article was to show that his efforts in improving the colony would have produced a positive outcome In Smiths point of view he believed that if they would have listened to what he had to say they would not be experiencing the difficulties in which they were undergoing One of these dilemmas included nature itself It weakened the colonists with its harsh weather limiting the supply of food within the region If they had considered the advice given by Smith by collecting food before the severe weather had arrived they could have evaded this disastrous situation from the beginning This was just one of the many ordeals John Smith was trying to prevent The problem in this particular story was the difficulties of beginning a new settlement in a new country This proved to be a strenuous task because for years John Smith tried to unite the colonists but they all neglected his efforts in improving the colony The settlers believed that because they were in a new country they had attained freedom from England So after years of frustration Smith abandoned them A few months after the departure of John Smith the colonists began to suffer many hardships Hardships he attempted to alleviate when he was present in the colony It was overwhelmed with disease famine and starvation leaving the entire colony crippled As a direct result John Smith writes this
