Senator I recently had an opportunity hear your ideas on achieving the Millennium Development Goals MDG which are set for 2015 As you know we are still a long way from achieving many of these goals and I am asking for your assistance to help make MDG4 reachable Low birth weight LBW babies continue to be a huge public health problem because LBW can result in the deaths of many infants and children According to the United Nations sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia are affected the most United Nations 2013 This is because of their large population sizes lack of health resources and money Income inequality was positively associated with low birth weight and infant mortality but its effect on infant mortality disappeared with the addition of primary care and other covariatesSHI et al2004 This is very important to maternal and child health as the topic of women and children make up majority of the MDGs it is imperative we find a way to stop women and children from dying and the need for an improved intervention program is now as we have less than two years before the stretch goal of 2015Since money is such a pronounced factor I have come up with a few interventions that can be implemented here since we as a developed country have not been able to eliminate this problem either These joint ventures can have a tremendous effect and it is imperative we instrument a new set of regulations to reduce low birth weight babies as there is a direct correlation between low birth weight and death According to the World Health Organization WHO LBW contributes to 60 to 80 of all neonatal deaths The global prevalence of LBW is 155 which amounts to about 20 million LBW infants born each year WHO 2013 p1 These figures are dramatic and it helps bring insight to how important MDG4 is At this time it is vital we focus on
