When someone hears the word drug they dont usually think of alcohol but instead they think of marijuana cocaine or heroin The truth is that alcohol is a drug and can be just as harmful if not more then some illegal drugs According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Alcoholism is defined as a chronic progressive incurable disease characterized by loss of control over alcohol and other sedatives There are many factors that lead up to alcoholism and the effects are many and affect more then just the alcoholic Drinkers can be placed into one of two groups There are those who are casual drinkers They drink because they want to and do it with a friend of group of friends for enjoyment and only on occasion The other kind of drinker drinks because they feel a need to do it They drink more heavily and frequently then the occasional drinker and may drink alone just to get drunk The drinkers in this group are called alcoholics and the factors that lead to their addiction vary but they share the same disease Alcohol is a legal and accepted drug Because of its availability people may abuse the drug to fit in due to peer pressure and stressful lifestyles When people have problems they usually like to work them out or find some sort of escape Because alcohol is a depressant it provides relief of anxiety personal conflicts and poor self-esteem Once a person becomes a regular drinker their tolerance to alcohol increases The person then has to drink more alcohol than before just to feel as drunk as they used to Then the lack of control begins The person drinks out of habit and cannot stop drinking even when they want to When people become physically and psychologically addicted to alcohol they become a different person then they were before their dependency An alcoholic may drink alone or secretly not remember
