The United States prides in its national policy which is centered on liberal democracy which aims to promote and sustain fundamental human rights and freedoms for its citizens Liberal democracy in itself is founded on the basis of equal representation through universal suffrage However despite the fact that the voting bracket has been steadily widening in the US over the years there are still many people who cannot vote or participate in electing the president of their country even though they are citizens and of the right age One such group of people is that of citizens convicted of felony They are either temporarily or permanently barred from voting Lyndon B Johnson who was the 36th President of the United States mentioned the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men qtd in Board Many States still enforce laws that permanently bar felons from voting even after serving their sentences while other States enforce these laws on a case-by-case basis Even though they have completed their sentences and paid for their crimes they still stand left out of the peoples fundamental human rights Although felons commit crimes and break the social order they fit in civic duties therefore they have to get restored the right to vote while they are in prisonSurprisingly there is a close relationship due to the relatively higher number of African-American felons that is called simply racism It is evident that African-Americans make up the majority of the population of felony convicts Sentencing Project which is a national non-profit organization that works for an equal U S criminal justice system indicates that the percentage of African-American people in prison is six times more than non-African-American populations Board This is a huge difference and one that only serves to aggravate the racism issue When examined in relation to the number of people prohibited
