Just a couple of weeks ago our class got visited by an American student named Frances Leslie who gave a presentation about her experience of the American high schools As the presentation progressed we found out more and more about the differences between the American school system and the Swedish school system To begin with I want to point out the major difference in the way the schools are financed in these both countries In the US it is the student who pays for their own education Books tools teacher salaries and basically the entire school is mainly financed by their students resulting in many high schools being very expensive In Frances Leslies case a lot of money was spent on education since she chose to attend one of the more exclusive and prestigious private high schools which was located in Yarmouth Maine She didnt tell us specifically how much the tuition fee for her school was but she pointed out that the tuition fee for most high schools in the USA is usually around 30000 dollars per year thus preventing people that come from a poor family to get a proper education which can lead to terrible consequences not only to the individuals who cant afford the education but also to the entire country in form of higher unemployment rates In Sweden on the other hand the state pays you if you study because the state realize that it is their responsibility that all their people get an education in order to lower the unemployment rate in the country resulting in more people having a better life and living by a higher standard All the schools including the upper secondary education and universities are also all state funded in Sweden as a result all kind of schools and other institutes for learning are completely freeMoreover Frances also states that in the US extracurricular activities are almost as important as the activities within the curriculum
