The primary role of a firefighter is to protect his or her community from disaster Whether it be storms fires floods hazardous spills or medical emergencies were always there In most cases theyre not paid but volunteer time to help better the community they reside in Volunteer firefighters leave their family dinners birthdays holiday celebrations and everything in between when there pager goes off not because they have to but because they want to Firefighting is not all about the work Its about your second family you brothers in arms The people you trust with your life each and every day I am proud to say I am part of that second family I have more brothers than I can count Ever since I saw the first episode of Rescue Me and toured my local fire department I wanted and knew I would be a fireman maybe not as a career but as a side job I found that place in my life when I heard about volunteers it confused me at first that you could volunteer for the job Then it hit me People living in their community want to protect it and give back I searched and searched for many nights and found nothing I was only 15 at the time and longed to be part of the fire service I with the help of friends came upon The Explorer program A program where from the age 14 to 18 you could become a junior firefighter Under the guidelines of this program you could become an exterior firefighter There was just one problem My local Fire Department did not have an explorer program I was determined to fix that In the next few weeks I met with classmates friends we decided that we will start the program ourselves We met with chiefs and captains of Larchmont Fire Department We got the ball rolling From then on it was out of our hands It
